'Lobby & Advocacy' intern: Jarne

My name is Jarne van der Poel, and I am a 22-year-old master's student in Utrecht. While studying History of Politics and Society, I study the historical roots of today's political and social issues. The answer to those challenges is international solidarity and sustainable development - an answer we do not always see in current Dutch politics.

The mission of the Foundation Max van der Stoel (FMS) is to make Dutch policy fairer for people here, and people elsewhere. For that reason, I have been an intern here since February with great enthusiasm 'Lobby and Advocacy'. In this role, I support lobbying towards MPs and policymakers on issues such as climate change and tax avoidance.

During my internship period, I was able to delve further into these topics. For example, together with my colleagues, during our Climate Justice-study took a critical look at European climate policy and made recommendations on how the voices of marginalised groups, such as women and youth in Africa, should be better represented in it.

In addition, within the partnership, I have Building Change critically monitored the effects of Dutch policies on developing countries. About this, I was allowed to present a opinion piece writing in the NRC. By following the political agenda and helping to think of ways to influence it, I learned more about the Dutch political landscape, and how certain things work in The Hague. I also got to know the many small and large civil society organisations working for development cooperation.

Finally, I followed at the Democracy-team of the Foundation the political developments in neighbouring countries around the European Union. This gave me the opportunity to delve into several topics: from LGBT rights in Serbia, to the fate of journalists and activists in Belarus, or human rights in the Palestinian territories. To understand current political problems in these countries, the underlying history is also important. This is where I was able to put the skills of my studies to good use.

The FMS consists of a small team. During all my work, I liked how much responsibility and trust I was given. When writing opinion pieces or letters on behalf of the Foundation, or producing articles for the website, I could often do my own thing. Also, my input and feedback was always taken seriously. Therefore, if you want to learn more about Dutch politics and international solidarity in a pleasant working environment, I would definitely recommend you to apply for this internship!
