We must help Ukraine win the war AND the peace

On 7 and 8 November, the Max van der Stoel Foundation co-hosted the first EUkraine Progressive Summit in Kyiv. We were there with a strong delegation from our political family to discuss Ukraine's future in Europe, social justice and a fair reconstruction of the country. See the statement signed by attendees at the conference here.

Despite the intense period Ukraine is going through, there were hundreds of participants at the conference: ministers, MPs, activists, trade unionists, veterans and young leaders. Several hundred more were added online. The programme was jam-packed with inspiring speakers from the EU and Ukrainian sides.

We stated first and foremost: Ukraine deserves our support. And only not to lose, but to win the war. Their struggle is also the struggle for a safe and free Europe. At the same time, we must also win the peace, and so we must work on what a progressive future can look like. A future the new generations can believe in.

On behalf of FMS and the European Forum for Democracy and Solidarity, Kido Koenig was allowed to moderate the first panel on

Ukraine's path to EU membership. Ukraine is making many strides under a lot of pressure and has thus nestled itself among the frontrunners among candidate countries. In doing so, it remains important not only to please the free market and foreign investors, but also to invest in social dialogue and the values of free democracy and rule of law.

It was special to be in Kyiv and show solidarity and also show up when things are difficult. Therefore, we made the most of the time we had there. For instance, in the evening of the 7th we did a collective brainstorming session on what to do for the women, youth, unions, and nature of Ukraine, among others. Small highlight was also the European Politics course on 8 November from our fantastic partner SD Platform Ukraine, where Kido, as guest speaker, was able to talk about the Netherlands, Brussels about anything they wanted to ask.

With a joint statement, a mission for Europe AND Ukraine, we concluded the days and the delegation boarded the train back to Poland tired, combative and enriched.
