'Communications & Research' intern: Tirza

My name is Tirza van Willigenburg, I am 23 years old and am currently doing an internship at the FMS as a communications & research intern. I am in the final year of my European Studies study at The Hague University of Applied Sciences, which happens to be next door to the FMS office. European Studies is a broad study in which international cooperation is an important topic. As soon as I saw the internship at the FMS come along, I thought it would be a good opportunity to further develop my interest in international cooperation and gain more experience.

As a communications and research intern, I am working on various topics. In the first month of my internship, I immediately joined the communications team for the SDG Spotlight Report which was responsible for the online launch of this report. The FMS is involved in this project through the partnership Building Change. SDG Spotlight was created in collaboration with several organisations, and in this I worked a lot with an intern from one of the other organisations involved.

I also manage social media, send out the monthly newsletter and collaborate on research Climate Justice: African Perspectives and the online magazine that goes with this. The study will be presented this autumn so, as a communications and research intern, I am also closely involved in the preparations for this.

The communications and research intern also has the fun task of organising the political cafés. You are in charge, which also means that you have a lot of say in the topic and what the café will look like. The great thing about the political café is that it can ensure that a specific topic is put in the 'spotlight'. And the advantage of an online event is that speakers from (almost) every corner of the world can be invited!

The variation in projects is great fun because it also gives you room to develop your own interests. Right from day one, I felt very welcome in the team despite the internship being largely online. The past months were a very instructive period during which I developed many new skills. I can definitely recommend an internship at FMS for anyone with broad (international) interests and looking for a very instructive internship!
