Vacancy: 'Policy and Advocacy' intern

Do you have a nose for politics and would like to contribute to a just and sustainable world?

Then come and do an internship at the Max van der Stoel Foundation! We are looking for a:

'Policy & Advocacy' intern

28h per week for the period February to June 2025

Location: The Hague

Apply no later than Sunday 15 December 2024

On the one hand, the Netherlands invests in climate policy and development cooperation, on the other hand, Dutch agriculture causes deforestation elsewhere in the world, our companies harm people and the environment, and developing countries miss out on millions in taxes via tax haven the Netherlands. So we take away with one hand what we have given with the other.

As Foundation Max van der Stoel (FMS), the independent foreign foundation affiliated to the PvdA, we work for fairer Dutch policy towards developing countries that does not conflict with itself. We do this by advocating interests to Dutch ministries and the Lower House. In doing so, we highlight the importance of development cooperation - at a time of large-scale cutbacks in the sector. This is done in close cooperation with civil society partners, such as 'Building Change'. For our work, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are an important guide.

What will you do?

  • You will assist in advocacy towards MPs and policy staff, for example by co-authoring letters or organising political meetings.
  • You keep track of current political and social developments on various topics, such as trade, migration, taxation and climate, and report on them to your colleagues and our network partners.
  • You regularly write articles or opinion pieces on the topics we cover.
  • You will also help generate visibility and attention through social media and newsletters.
  • Together with other interns and the project officer in charge, you will organise online and offline political events and help think about interesting speakers and the programme.

Who are we looking for?

  • You have a good sense of politics and an open, communicative attitude. You enjoy working in a political environment.
  • You feel connected to social democratic and progressive ideas and want to contribute to this through activities and analysis.
  • You possess knowledge of and interest in Dutch politics, with a specific focus on the international impact of Dutch policies and the SDGs.
  • You can gather and analyse information efficiently and articulate it clearly, even under time pressure.
  • You have a sharp pen and a good command of Dutch and English, and can write news articles for a wider audience.
  • You are able to work independently in a busy work environment.
  • You are familiar with social media and programmes like Canva.
  • You enjoy helping organise events.

What do we offer?

  • An internship of February to June for four days a week (28 hours). We work in the office at least two days a week.
  • A behind-the-scenes look at a political foundation and various NGOs and development organisations.
  • You will work with a small and collegial team, in the midst of a dynamic political environment at the Labour Party office;
  • Good, intensive internship supervision where we sit down regularly to discuss your goals, with room for your personal input;
  • An internship allowance of €460 per month.
  • An internship where flexible working hours and partial working from home are possible.
