UNited for Climate Justice

Since April 2019, together with FEPS (Foundation for European Progressive Studies) and several other European partners, we have been working on the UNited for Climate Justice initiative. With the climate emergency becoming clearer than ever, it is time for action.

Climate justice is significant, because it stands for an agenda that links the struggle for a prosperous and safe future for all with the fight against inequalities and exclusion. We want to ensure political commitment to safeguard our planet and livelihoods whilst ensuring a sustainable transition guided by the principle of fairness and social justice.

Steering Committee

Under the chairpersonship of Teresa Ribera, Minister for the Ecological Transition in Spain, a steering committee convened. This group gathers together concerned stakeholders from across the world encompassing policy experts, academics, political, civil society and business representatives.

We want to set out the strong need for clear collective action and systemic change to facilitate rapid decarbonisation and at the same time enhance global economic equality.

Our five guiding proposals for Climate Justice are:

1. Include Just Transition plans in the process of preparing the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs)
2. Climate-proof global investment, finance and trade
3. Engage young people in decision-making through green youth councils
4. Establish an international framework for sustainability and environmental rights
5. Require a more adequate target of nature-based solutions in NDCs

Follow-up

The UNited for Climate Justice initiative aims to serve debates ahead of the UN Climate Action Summit on Monday 23 September 2019 in New York. Just before we will also hold a large side event on Friday 20 September in New York.

Until late 2020, FEPS with the support of FMS will continue their research on climate justice. More information will follow soon!
