Saturday 14 April marks Africa Day 2018: the event on Africa and international cooperation at KIT in Amsterdam, organised by FEPS and FMS. This year, the theme of the day is new activism. Because even though traditional power is still often closed, activists often know how to bring about change. Who speaks more from the heart about this than activists themselves? With Moses Isooba of the pan-African movement Africans Rising and only 27-year-old Tikhala Itaye from Malawi, the day immediately gets a great opening. Cherry-fresh editor-in-chief of OneWorld, Seada Nourhussen, will interview these two activists to hear all their experiences!
But there is much more. Ethiopian author Leenco Lata gives an impressive speech on the concept of "failed states", Jan Pronk talks about his latest book and Lilianne Ploumen looks back on her ministry. Of course, there will also be plenty of focus on art and culture. The day will end with a bang with already the sixth edition of "Africa at Night" in Desmet Studios! So buy your tickets quickly at www.afrikadag.nl!
On the programme...
Besides various activists from Africa, there is also a lot of focus on other themes. There are several workshops on migration, authors of the anthology Black come along and you can get useful tips for your lobbying. There is also a lot of focus on the role of new technologies, the importance of the diaspora and women empowerment. At the end of the day, the Albert Schweitzer Prize 2018 will be awarded for the best idea to improve healthcare in Africa. View the full programme here.
iAfrica Festival and culture on Africa Day
This year there will be another special edition of the iAfrica Festival on Africa Day! Yangambi is organising a special programme full of art and culture. With your Africa Day ticket, you can drop in all afternoon. You won't have to be bored during the break either: Labyrinth organises a special programme with various spoken word artists and, of course, delicious food! Tired of all the impressions? Then watch one of the documentaries and films screened on Africa Day.
"Africa at Night" with Paa Kofi
But of course, Africa Day is not complete without the banging afterparty "Africa at Night". For the sixth time now, Project Nana is organising this crazy evening for us. Besides live performances and delicious beats by Paa Kofi, among others, there will also be another African meal on offer. So be sure to close out 14 April at Desmet Studios!
