The FMS is looking for 3 trainees from February 2023!

Are you looking for a challenging internship? Do you like making the case for democracy and human rights? Or do you care about climate change and exploitation of developing countries? Are you interested in the European Union, Eastern Europe, the Western Balkans, Africa or the Middle East? Then come do an internship at the Max van der Stoel Foundation!

The Foundation Max van der Stoel (FMS) is an independent foreign foundation affiliated to the PvdA. We work for democratisation in the EU's neighbouring countries, fairer Dutch and EU policies towards developing countries, and we stimulate public debate on these issues in the Netherlands. The FMS works from our office in The Hague with a small, young team of permanent staff and 3 interns.

We are currently looking again for 3 new interns (m/f/x) for spring 2023 (February to June). This is an internship of four days a week with a placement fee of 460 euros per month (if you are enrolled at a Dutch higher education institution, otherwise a lower volunteer fee applies). See the three vacancies this page.

As an intern, you will work in an international, political environment. As a result, no day is ever the same. You will gain experience in a political foundation, get to know many other organisations in the playing field, and delve further into international issues and developments abroad.

Interested? Then respond no later than Monday, 28 November 2022! Here you will find more information on how to apply.

They went before you:

Mathieu - Democracy intern

I experienced my internship at the FMS as an instructive and fascinating period. Because you are occupied daily with (geo)political developments and current affairs, you are actually continuously discussing important topics, but above all making them negotiable. FMS also gave me a lot of freedom to take on projects and dive deeper into certain topics. Because of the fine and close cooperation with colleagues, you get a lot of responsibility and a complete insight into the organisation and partner organisations in a short time. I learned a lot about the topics, the practical side of working for an international foundation and, above all, had a great time!

Geerke - Democracy intern

"During my internship at the FMS, I learnt to write in-depth and opinion articles on topics that are close to my heart. For example, I got to write an in-depth article on climate summit COP27 in Egypt and an opinion piece on Rutte's visit to Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories. I was encouraged to follow my interests, but there was also good guidance when I needed it. As an intern at the FMS, you really are part of the team and attend the weekly meetings. Your contributions are taken seriously and there is plenty of room for your own initiative. I personally appreciated that attitude enormously as an intern."

Sofie - Trainee Lobby and Advocacy

Since September this year, I have been an intern at the FMS as a 'lobbying and advocacy' trainee. After 4 years of continuous study, it is very nice to now be able to make a socially relevant contribution with the knowledge I have gained. The FMS team is young, motivated and incredibly sociable; I very quickly felt at ease and a worthy part of this team. I am involved in (almost) all aspects of FMS's development work. As a result, I see this internship as an enormous opportunity to gain both substantive and practical knowledge about Dutch development cooperation (and related topics), lobbying, and more. The work is very varied and dynamic - the lobbying activities take place in the constantly changing political context in The Hague. Highly recommended for all students with an interest in and knowledge of development cooperation and Dutch politics!
