Vacancy: intern Democracy & International Cooperation

Are you passionate about politics and international cooperation? And do you have a strong desire to make a positive contribution to a more democratic, fairer and more sustainable world? Then come and do an internship at PRO’s new Foreign Affairs Foundation! We are looking for:

Intern Democracy & International Cooperation

32 hours per week for the period from September 2026 to January 2027

Location: Utrecht

Applications are open until Wednesday 17 June

During this placement, you will contribute to the international work of PRO’s new international foundation. This foundation brings together and strengthens international progressive, green and social-democratic partners in (South) Eastern Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. We do this on the basis of shared ambitions: democratisation, empowering women and young people, and protecting the climate.

This internship focuses primarily on our international partnerships. You will identify relevant political developments in the regions where we operate, write articles on these topics, and assist with the organisation of international and national meetings. You will support collaboration with political parties and civil society movements around the world, but particularly in and around Europe, through training, capacity building and joint projects.

PRO’s new international foundation is a merger of the Max van der Stoel Foundation and the GroenLinks International Foundation. The international foundation is affiliated with PRO but operates independently. With an internship in autumn 2026, you will be part of the first cohort of interns in this new organisation! The new foundation will continue the work of both organisations, including their work on democracy and international cooperation.

What will you do?

  • Organising meetings, public events and (online) activities;
  • Writing news reports and analysis on political developments in the Western Balkans, Eastern Europe, Southern Caucasus, Middle East and North Africa;
  • Administrative support, such as assisting with and contributing ideas to our international projects and meetings.

Who are we looking for?

  • You have an interest in democracy, international cooperation and politics;
  • You feel connected to progressive ideas;
  • You are communicatively strong, write clearly and accessibly in both Dutch and English;
  • You work independently, show initiative and enjoy working with many different organisations;
  • You have experience with (or want to learn to work with) social media, Canva and organising events.

We understand that you may not have all the knowledge yet, and you don't have to. Motivation and room for development are most important. We encourage everyone - all backgrounds, M/F/X, much or less experience - to apply.

What do we offer?

  • An internship running from September to January, four days a week (32 hours).
  • Working in a small, close-knit team;
  • Intensive guidance, regular feedback moments and space for your own learning goals;
  • An internship allowance of €750 per month;
  • Flexible working hours and opportunities to work partly from home.
