EN Kinshasa, een stad van twaalf miljoen mogelijkheden
Met grote ambitie in mijn koffers land ik op zaterdag 17 november 2018 in de hoofdstad Kinshasa, Democratische Republiek Congo. Een stad van 12 miljoen vrouwen, mannen en kinderen. Ik blijf hier tot 30 december.
Je kan op twee manieren naar deze stad kijken. Je kan zeggen: ‘het is een chaotische stad waar niks werkt’. Je kan ook over die chaos heen kijken en zeggen: ‘ik zie hier 12 miljoen mogelijkheden en kansen’. En dat laatste is mijn instelling.

De voorbereidingen voor de Afrikadag 2019 zijn weer in volle gang! Met migratie als hoofdthema en een mooie line-up aan interessante sprekers (later meer!) belooft het weer een spetterende editie te worden.
Wij hopen van harte dat jullie bij deze editie aanwezig zijn! Vrijdag 1 maart gaat de kaartverkoop van start.

Expert meeting migratie in het IISG
Op woensdag 19 december organiseerden we een expert meeting over migratie in het Internationaal Instituut voor Sociale Geschiedenis in Amsterdam, in het kader van het onderzoek African Perspectives, om ook de perspectieven van jongeren in Afrika mee te nemen in de discussie over migratie. Waarom willen zij migreren, of waarom juist niet? Aanwezig waren rond de twintig experts op het gebied van migratie, vanuit verschillende organisaties. Zij gaven input op het onderzoek dat onze onderzoeker Anne heeft gedaan in Ghana. Het was een hele nuttige en leerzame middag, en de input gaat zeker mee in de rest van het onderzoek. We bedanken alle deelnemers voor hun bijdrage, en het IISG voor hun gastvrijheid!
Political Café: A new future for Ethiopia?
On Tuesday 27 November, FMS, FEPS and NIMD organized a Political Café in Pakhuis de Zwijger about the future for Ethiopia, but also about neighbouring country Eritrea. Since the appointment of the new prime minister Abiy Ahmed in April, many reforms have been implemented in Ethiopia. The country welcomed its first female head of state and the first female president of the federal supreme court. Furthermore, Ahmed and Eritrea’s President Isaias Afwerki signed a declaration of peace in July that formally ended two decades of hostility. Experts in the field of, or from, Ethiopia and Eritrea discussed the new situation in these countries. The moderator of the evening was Alberta Opoku, journalist and political scientist, leading the evening and challenging both the speakers and the public with her questions, furthering the dialogue.
Public meeting: “Young Generations for the New Western Balkans: Beyond Emigration”
Recent research shows that between 25.000 – 40.000 people are annually leaving each of the Western Balkans countries. Not only young people, but increasingly the middle class as well. A group of young scientist from the region has engaged in a project ‘New Horizons for the Young Generations in the Balkans” in order to discuss their visions how to overcome old- fashioned politics and nationalisms and the lack of perspective for younger generations. They will sketch alternative horizons and the look for alternatives for South-Eastern Europe’s way beyond emigration. Den Haag will be the first place in Europe after Vienna where the results of the mentioned initiative will be presented to the public.

De FMS, in samenwerking met het European Forum for Democracy and Solidarity en Building Change, zoekt vier stagiair(e)s voor de periode van januari (/februari) tot en met juni!
Cyberaanvallen vanuit Rusland: van een cyberoorlog (nog) geen sprake
Ank Bijleveld, minister van Defensie, stelde op 14 oktober dat Nederland in een cyberoorlog met Rusland is verwikkeld. Sinds 2015 is het regelmatig in het nieuws: cyberaanvallen vanuit Rusland in verschillende Westerse landen. De term oorlog lijkt overtrokken, er is ten slotte nog geen fysieke schade aangericht, maar de aanvallen worden wel steeds brutaler. Hoe is het zo gekomen, hoe werkt het, en hoe gaan we ermee om? Over deze en andere vragen spraken cyber –en inlichtingenexpert Andrei Soldatov en Eliot Higgins van Bellingcat in de Rode Hoed in Amsterdam.

In less than two weeks, I will fly to Accra (Ghana) to conduct a research on the migration incentives of the African youth. Do they ever think about migrating? Do they think about living in Europe? Do they have family members and friends who live in another country? And how and where do they see their own future?
Discussing migration and social justice in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso
On October 12 and 13, the Burkinabe party People’s Movement for Progress (MPP) invited members of the Progressive Alliance to Ouagadougou to discuss the topic of migration and social justice. FMS and FEPS are currently working on a study which aims to include African perspectives on migration in the European discussion on the topic. With more than 25 delegations represented during the seminar, of which many from African countries, it was a perfect occasion for us to learn more about the different African sentiments on this widely discussed issue.
Word jij een van onze nieuwe Afrikadag stagiair(e)s?
Ook komend jaar organiseert de Foundation Max van der Stoel (FMS) de Afrikadag (www.afrikadag.nl), een landelijke bijeenkomst over Afrika en internationale samenwerking. Met meer dan 1.000 bezoekers, 200 sprekers en zo’n 100 vrijwilligers is de Afrikadag hét grootste evenement op het gebied van Afrika en internationale samenwerking in Nederland.
De FMS zoekt twee stagiair(e)s voor de organisatie van de Afrikadag, die plaatsvindt op zaterdag 13 april 2019. Samen met de verantwoordelijke projectmedewerker werk je mee aan de inhoudelijke en organisatorische werkzaamheden voor de Afrikadag.
