What does Moldova's European course mean for democracy in the country? That question was at the heart of the conference Building Progressive Unity: Pathways to Democratic Renewal in Moldova<\/em> in Chi\u0219in\u0103u. The conference was organised by the Foundation for Democracy and Progress, in cooperation with the Olof Palme International Center and Foundation Max van der Stoel (FMS).<\/p>\n

Political parties, trade unions and civil society organisations discussed democratic renewal, political participation and the path to the EU in Moldova's future. It became clear that European integration is much more than a technical or geopolitical trajectory. It is ultimately also about trust, political cooperation and whether citizens feel heard. This is still too often not the case in today's Moldova.<\/p>\n

One of the key insights was that the political landscape in Moldova is often more complex than it appears at first glance. Sometimes merely dismissing opposition parties as pro-Russian, as has been visible in several campaigns in recent years, does not always do justice to this reality. Especially in a democracy, it is important that political parties, despite major differences of opinion, develop a shared understanding of their role and responsibility within the democratic process.<\/p>\n

The discussions also discussed the growing criticism of current government policies, especially around economic aspects, and the concerns about this within parts of society. Several participants stressed that sustainable support for European integration is only possible if there remains room for political plurality, social debate and strong collaborations between trade unions, civil society and left-wing politics. For this, progressive, pro-European forces in Moldovan party politics are indispensable.<\/p>\n

The conference was organised by the Foundation for Democracy and Progress, in collaboration with the Olof Palme International Center and Foundation Max van der Stoel (FMS).<\/p>\n
