Those were the words with which the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps on 2 March\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/3\/2\/iran-says-will-attack-any-ship-trying-to-pass-through-strait-of-hormuz\" rel=\"noopener\">announced that the Strait of Hormuz would be blocked<\/a>. Ships that tried to cross anyway would be set on fire. US President Trump has made it clear that his allies would have to help open the Strait of Hormuz, and acting passively would \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/c0434932w44o\" rel=\"noopener\">a foolish decision<\/a>\u00a0are\u201d. Nevertheless,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/aerospace-defense\/us-allies-rebuff-trumps-request-support-strait-hormuz-2026-03-16\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Germany, Spain and Italy<\/a>\u00a0to not (yet) want to undertake a mission in the Gulf region. But what Trump wants is clear: allies must help the US as well as be willing to behave according to his wishes.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">However, the strategy seems to have backfired: more and more states are trying to\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/economy\/2026\/3\/16\/strait-of-hormuz-which-countriess-ships-has-iran-allowed-safe-passage-to\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Bilateral agreement with Iran<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0strike and thus not surrendering at all to pressure from America. Yet the US manages to get at least the UK to agree to its\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/c36rny6xgppo\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Making military bases available<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to the US, despite Starmers' earlier\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">pledge to be<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0'<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nu.nl\/midden-oostenconflict\/6388216\/starmer-laat-zich-niet-uit-tent-lokken-door-trump-houden-vast-aan-principes.html\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">fixed<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0at\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">adhere to principles<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2019. The problem for allies is that<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0you with<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0give in once\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Trump<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">not exempt from a subsequent (and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">possibly\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">greater) favour.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">How<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0negotiate with a president who never has enough?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Strait of Hormuz<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Why the pressure from Washington is so strong has mainly to do with the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz. That this strait would be closed<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0by Iran<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">fell<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to be expected. The Strait of Hormuz borders Iran, the United Arab Emirates and Oman. The strait is of great economic importance to the whole world<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0because it is an important sea route for fossil fuels. In addition, the Americans have several military bases in the vicinity. These dependencies make the Strait of Hormuz a geopolitical pressure tool of considerable magnitude with which Iran can influence regional, as well as global<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0can affect economic stability. Incidentally, there is already\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.belfercenter.org\/publication\/closing-time-assessing-iranian-threat-strait-hormuz\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">thought about this scenario more often<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and practised for it by US forces in recent decades.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In 2025, the strait was good for letting through<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0about<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/about\/oil-security-and-emergency-response\/strait-of-hormuz\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">20 million oil barrels per day<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Oil is shipped from countries in the Persian Gulf mainly to East Asia, but anyone who has been at the pump in recent days will have noticed the price hike. Blocking passage through the Strait of Hormuz could have long-lasting effects on the global economy<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0but also for the course of the conflict. Iran may likewise use the Strait to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-03-24\/iran-charges-some-ships-hormuz-transit-fees-for-safe-passage\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">collect tolls on<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">passing ships<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, as a form of retaliation for the war as well as previously imposed sanctions that have severely affected the Iranian economy, and thus the Iranian people.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Endless demands<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The current situation in the Strait of Hormuz is just one example of Trump's aggressive foreign policy. After the June 2025 NATO summit in The Hague, he demanded that NATO countries increase their defence spending from 2% to 5% of gross domestic product. This was already causing unrest among allies<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nos.nl\/artikel\/2571779-spanje-wil-niet-voldoen-aan-beoogde-nieuwe-navo-norm-van-5-procent\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">only Spain was an outspoken opponent<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0of the plan. Also in the support\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">for<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ukraine is clear about the fickleness of US foreign policy: in March 2025, the US cut off all aid to Ukraine, which shortly afterwards became\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us-ukraine-meet-saudi-arabia-after-disastrous-white-house-talks-2025-03-11\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Resumed after negotiations in Saudi Arabia<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. In the process, Europe is visibly sucked into the capriciousness of US policy: it will have US weapons\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2025\/07\/26\/europe-ukraine-us-weapons-deal\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">selling to Ukraine<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, provided that\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/aerospace-defense\/trump-administration-clears-first-ukraine-arms-aid-paid-by-allies-sources-say-2025-09-16\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">the allies together<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the bill<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0pay<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. The Trump administration is rewarding\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">cooperation<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">not, but rather sees it as an opening for the next request.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This was reflected in the import tariffs the US wanted to impose in April 2025. These caused a lot of chaos and were framed by the US as \u2018reciprocal\u2019 levies. Although almost a year on, we know that the US president has imposed the import levies<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">by the US Supreme Court as unfounded\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">its<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">assessed, levies have been reduced to 10% until July 2026. Still, the increase in levies or the intended growth in US internal trade does not seem to have been the biggest goal. The impact of the levies was immediately clear: many heads of state travelled to Washington to see if they could reach an agreement. Trump seemed only\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/tv\/news\/donald-trump-tariffs-china-kiss-b2730244.html\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">overjoyed<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">be\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">with these cards in his hand.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A transactional transatlantic relationship - does it break here?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The longer the US-Israel war on Iran lasts, the more resourceful states will have to become in the face of rising fuel prices. Trump is thus risking the relationship the US has with its allies. In a geopolitical climate where today's commitments are already forgotten tomorrow, it is important for allies to have a clear vision of what their new strategy should be.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ongoing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">agreeing to Trump's demands could lead to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Europe<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Once again to participate in a war in the Gulf region<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and this is another opening for the next request.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">By the day\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">appear<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">we are further away from the liberal world order that is precisely\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">US was convenient. International law also seems more like a memory of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">formerly<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">than an effective stick. It will become increasingly difficult to remain a friend of the US if allies want to stick to the values and norms that were once shared.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">No clear strategy can be discerned in the current US course. This requires Europe to adapt to geopolitical realities. If we do not want to be drawn further into conflict, we need to think about new partnerships and strategies in trade, security and politics. Calling for de-escalation alone is not enough. Europe must concretely define where the line is drawn: at ground invasion, or only when energy prices escalate further? A clear and firm stance can show that Europe is willing to steer its own course.
