Vacancy: 'Lobby and Advocacy' intern

Do you have a nose for politics and would you like to contribute to a just and sustainable world? Then come do an internship at the Max van der Stoel Foundation! We are looking for:

1 intern (m/f/x) 'Lobby and Advocacy'

28h per week for the period February 2024 to June 2024

Location: The Hague

Apply no later than Sunday 17 December

The Foundation Max van der Stoel (FMS) is an independent foreign foundation affiliated to the PvdA. We work for democratisation in countries where democracy is under pressure, and for fairer Dutch dealings with developing countries. Too often, politicians and policymakers in the Netherlands make decisions that have a negative impact on developing countries. For instance, Dutch trade, agriculture and climate policies undermine efforts for sustainable and equitable development. We must avoid giving with one hand and taking with the other.

In the partnership 'Building Change' FMS works with Partos and Woord&Daad. Together, we advocate for fair Dutch policies that do not negatively impact sustainable development in low-income countries. We speak to MPs, officials and scientists and write position papers and articles on these topics. Guiding our work are the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

What will you do?

  • You will independently assist in lobbying members of parliament and policymakers, for example by co-authoring lobby letters or organising political meetings.
  • You keep track of current political and social developments on various themes, such as trade, migration, taxes and climate, and report on these to your colleagues. You do this for both FMS and Building Change, but also for the Tax Justice Netherlands network, of which FMS is a member.
  • You regularly write articles or opinion pieces on the topics we cover.
  • You will also help generate visibility and attention through social media and newsletters.
  • Together with other interns and the project officer in charge, you will organise online and offline political events and help think about interesting speakers and the programme.

Who are we looking for?

  • You have a good sense of politics and an open, communicative attitude. You enjoy working in a political environment.
  • You possess knowledge of and interest in Dutch politics, with a specific focus on the international impact of Dutch policies and the SDGs.
  • You can gather and analyse information efficiently and articulate it clearly, even under time pressure.
  • You have a sharp pen and a good command of Dutch and English, and can write news articles for a wider audience.
  • You are able to work independently in a busy work environment.
  • You are familiar with social media and programmes like Canva, or willing to learn about them;
  • You enjoy helping organise events.

We understand that you may not have all the knowledge yet, and you don't have to. Motivation and room for development are most important. We encourage everyone - all backgrounds, much or less experience - to apply.

What do we offer?

  • An internship from February to June for four days a week (28 hours).
  • A behind-the-scenes look at a political foundation and various NGOs and development organisations.
  • A small-scale and collegial working environment with room for your personal input.
  • Good, intensive internship supervision where we sit down together regularly to discuss your goals.
  • An internship allowance of €460 per month.
  • An internship where flexible working hours and partial working from home are possible
